MK390

Post by ATN_Rep on Fri Jul 11, 2008 9:29 am

Sir,

The difference between the Gen 1+ and a Gen 2 is very high, The resolution is alot better, and the range is double on the Gen 2 vs. Gen 1+.
In Gen 1+ the resolution will be clearest in the middle of the FOV and as you go toward the outskirts of the FOV it get blurrier cuasing a bit of a fish eye effect, which is standard for Gen 1+. In Gen 2 you have clear resolution in the entire FOV. The image Quality will be brighter, sharper, and you will have better contrast. That is why a Gen 2 is about $1000 to 1200 Dollars more than a Gen 1+.

Thanks for the question.

That answers my quesiton. I there a pic floating around that has been taken through a mk390 i would really like to see through one before i drop 600 dollars on a scope. I have used night vision in the military before and it was GEN2 equipment i do realize that there will be difference but with the addition of optics and so forth how much change will there be.

Steve L is correct.

Although the MK390 and the MK6900 Crusader series look similar, they are vastly different. The electronics in the bodies and space to install various Image Intensifiers is different. Currently ATN Uses Gen 1+ current production image intensifier tubes which are produced in our factory in Russia. Where all Gen 1 image intensifiers are produced. We do not use surplus Gen 1 tubes, like others. Now the MK6900 Crusader series can be fitted with Gen 2 through Gen 4 tubes, do to the size of the tubes and the electronics that are installed in the body housing. Unfortunately the electronics that are required for the Gen 2 and up image tubes would not fit into the MK390 body. It's just how the two units were designed.

Hope this helps,

You can put a gen three tube in some gen two products, but not many. A gen one product will stay a gen one product due to vastly different technologies. All gen one items will stay gen one.

Russian tubes

The reason I was asking about the up grade possiblities is that ATN has the same bodies for a bunch of different scopes. all have an 85mm body from my understanding. and being such i would think that all they would have to do is sub in a newer gen tube.

All gen one tubes from everyone are Russian. There are no upgrades available. It is highly unlikely to use your scope enough to deplete the life of the intensifier tube. Most gen one tubes are destroyed because they are improperly used in lit conditions, or left on in the dark and then ruined when light is allowed to enter the scope unbeknownst to you.

I am looking very hard at buying a MK390 Pladin from ATN for hunting coyotes and bobcats using an AR-15 platform. What I would like to know is does ATN use Russian tubes in this scope and is it possible to upgrade the IIT to a newer generation once this gen1+ tube goes out? Thanks

Matt
