I am a fan of both units, and there are differences between the two. The Recon uses less batteries and batteries last longer. This is just an advance in their technology, Pulsar and Yukon are both owned by the same company. If battery life isn't an issue, than save a little money up front with the Ranger. I have used the Ranger and at 100 yards been able to Identify a raccoon, but at 150 yards it might be harder to have recognition of smaller animals. If more ambient light is present, ie stars or moon, you will have abetter chance.
