Its generally a good practice to subtract about 40% of the range on a rangefinder with a deer sized target. It will get the maximum range if you were ranging at a big white barn for example, but for anything smaller you will want to take away that 40%. The Nikon 550 will realistically range objects about 6'x6' at 350-400 yards. If you need the full 500-550 yard mark, I'd stick with the Nikon Rifle Hunter 1000 that has a range of 1000 yards and a realistic range of 600-700 yards.

Trevor,
I looked at the one you mentioned and also at the Nikon Forestry 550. Can you tell me which one would be favorable in my job application? I will most likely go with your recommendation. Once again my application would be looking at objects on a communication tower or even standing at street level and looking at the top of a tall building since communication equipment is generally mounted on the rooftop. I would be able to get an accurate building height and then when I get to the rooftop would be able to use tape measure at that point or eyeball. And once again 0-500 ft.

The Nikon Rifle Hunter 1000 would be a good choice for your application. Though this is designed for a hunter, it has the range and ability to range objects at the angles you need it to. Nikon stayed true to its name and made a great product in this rangefinder.

Hello,
I am looking for a tool to find the height of antennas on towers and structures. My job is to get accurate readings of objects installed on antenna structures. Anywhere from 0-500 ft structures, looking at 4-12 ft diameter objects. Any recommendations.
