In my opinion I don't deer hunt I prefer to hunt hogs I use a 30/30 marlin with a red dot with a x3 magnefire feels better than a scope if the hog is close my magnefire is out of the way and when they just don't want to get close I just slap on the magnefire and wala red dot x3 it's a nice setup I had a hard time finding a red dot and magnefire small enoght th fit in that small rail the 30/30 uses but it was worth it basically u don't need a scope for a 30/30 your plane sights will work and if you use a red dot it's just to get quicker target acquisition the x3 magnefire well that's just to reach out and tap that deer/hog when there just a little 2 far to judge a good shot placement in other words a scope is just a waste of money for 30$ you can get a good red dot and for 50$ more a magnefire thenks for your time and hope this helped happy hunting

To keep the 30/30 carbine light and handy, go with a scope with low to medium magnification (1.5 -7 power) and a medium to small objective (35mm or smaller). A fixed 4X, 1.5-4X or 2-7X are about right. In spite of what some say about iron or even fiber optic sights, you will easily get another 15-30 minutes shooting time with a good scope. In dim light, grey deer in grey woods just blend in too well. I have used the fiber optics and they are great in medium light but they don't compare to a bright scope when it's getting dark, near the end of legal shooting time. Also, the magnification helps you to see antlers and points more clearly when you have to get it right to be legal. As for quality, you don't need a premium scope but plan on spending at least $75, preferably more.

I regularly make 200 yd shots with a 30/30. Not too difficult to aim 3 to 4 inches high and bullet still has plenty of knockdown. I have been hunting with one for 25 years and I use a 4-12x40 Bushnell Sportsman. Maybe a little overkill, but it's there and only set me back about 80 bucks. If you're shooting less than 100 yards you shouldn't need a scope

A 3-9 or a 2.5-10 are pretty much overkill for a .30-30 rifle. Maximum range for this caliber is in the area of 150 yards. Most game taken with this caliber is well within 100 yards. I would look at a small fixed 4X or ideally something along the lines of a 1-4x24 variable. Something small and light that doesn't throw off the natural handling of the rifle. Just to add some perspective here: if you are shooting at a deer at 100 yards, if your scope is set at 10X he is going to look like he is 10 yards away, if your scope is set a 4X he will appear to be 40 yards away. With a 10X view giving the appearance of 10 yards, you essentially have no field of view, shakiness is much more obvious, and everything you do will be greatly intensified. If you are on 4X, you have a much wider FOV and you can typically make an easier, quicker shot, especially on running game.

I used a 2.82x10x44 Aetec Simmons on my Marlin and it's a hellava scope, great for short, medium, and long range. Dunno if you want to spend that much money (200 bucks) but well worth it.

Best scope for Marlin 30-30 for close to medium range game?

I just bought a Marlin 30-30 from a friend and it has a low quality scope on it. I was wondering what would be a good choice for a new scope to hunt game at medium range (3-9 power scope perhaps). Any advice?
