Hi Bill. For a magnified riflescope, consider the Nikon
P-22 with the BDC 150 reticle. The scope will be perfect for friendly plinking up to 100 yards and more, and the smaller, lighter scope and objective lens will not be a detriment at all, since you're shooting in the daytime in fair conditions at worst. Would you consider a red dot sight? They won't give you magnification, so your accuracy expectations will not be as such with a magnified scope, but everyone who shoots with one loves it. Sounds like you're having fun, and not worried about maximum potention accuracy, which really takes a lot of the fun out of the equasion, and this is especially true for new shooters. Consider a Vortex Sparc! Wonderful little products, and I've had perfect performance out of several!

Looking to buy scope for my S&W M&P-15 22 for under $200 . All I will be doing is target shooting at no more than 50 yds.

Thank you, Bill
