A great unit for your needs would be the Night Spirit Gen 2, it is under a grand and the performance is really good for the price tag.

I am taking my girlfriend camping for the first time. Needless to say she is a bit weary of sleeping in a tent. She is afraid of the noises. She said she wants to see everything around the tent. What can I buy besides the conventional flashlight to give her some piece of mind? Not looking for anything really expensive. I would like to utilize whatever I settle on, for hiking, and camping trips in the future. I would like something reliable and compact. Any recommendations for something under a grand?
