Pentax ZX-M Manual Focus Camera Body (K1000 replacement) Product Info

Like its sister models in the popular ZX-series, the ZX-M offerssuper-compact dimensions and straightforward, easy to read dial controls; but itis totally manual. It incorporates an array of creative and user-friendlyfeatures, including a multi-mode exposure system; an advanced light meteringsystem; and a 1/2000-second high-speed shutter. As a result, this is the modelfor the next generation of photographers as well as those who want to learn thebasic skills through creativity and fun. The ZX-M helps teach photography in asimple and easy way.

For a long time photo instructors in high schools and colleges across the United States have been telling their students that they must own a manually controlled single lens reflex as a prerequisite to taking the class, and they had to have Pentax K1000 camera. Pentax discontinued the K-1000 in 1997, but our Pentax ZX-M Manual Focus 35mm camera replaced K1000, but added such modern features as motorized wind and rewind, self-timer, and electronic release.

The Features

  • The ZX-M offers four different exposure modes: the hands-off Programmed AE, the depth-oriented Aperture-Priority AE, the action-oriented Shutter-Priority AE, and the totally maneuverable Metered Manual.
  • The ZX-M's multi-pattern metering system is designed to get the maximum performance from the camera's auto-exposure modes -- even in difficult backlighting and high-contrast situations.
  • The built-in film winder loads the film, advances it to the first frame, winds it at the speed of two frames per second, and rewinds the film at the end of the roll -- all automatically.
  • With a single push on the preview button, you can check the depth-of-field for a given aperture before shooting to ensure the desired visual effect. This function is usable even when the lens aperture ring is set to the "A" (auto) position.
  • The easy-to-use exposure compensation lets you quickly adjust the exposure level within a +/- 3EV range in 1/2 EV steps for bracketing or for intentional under- or overexposure.
  • The memory lock feature allows the user to ensure correct exposure on a single element in the final image by memorizing the exposure data for 10 seconds with simple push-button operation.
  • With a top shutter speed of 1/2000 second, the ZX-M can freeze a critical moment in the subject's movement. Such high shutter speeds are very useful in sports and action photography.
  • The built-in electronic self-timer delays the shutter release by 12 seconds, allowing the photographer to be part of the picture. This is also useful for avoiding camera shake in slow-shutter and Bulb applications.
  • The external LCD panel and viewfinder display offer a range of useful photographic data to the photographer at a glance. The viewfinder also features a Pentax-original Natural-Bright-Matte focusing screen for a sharp, clear viewfinder image.
  • You can manually select the desired ISO film speed between ISO6 and ISO6400 in 1/3 steps for non-DX-coded film or for an intentional shift of the exposure level on an entire roll of film.
  • The ZX-M measures just 5.3" wide, 3.6" high and 2.2" deep, and weighs only 10.8 oz. making it compact enough for the user to bring along on every occasion.
  • In addition to the SMC Pentax A-series manual-focus lenses, the FA- and F-series autofocus lenses can also be used with the ZX-M, as well as a wide range of optional accessories to satisfy the photographer's every creative need.

Helpful Positive Review Nice little camera by Legacy Reviewer, December 25, 2009
The manual is at least honest about it: when you are using the 50mm f2 lens and want to shoot in AV, TV, or manual mode, your picture will be overexposed unless you turn down the exposure compensation dial a notch. Not a big deal. If you shoot in ...
