Needs improvement

Reasonable image for a low resolution sensor. DO NOT go by the images presented in the ad or on Armasight's web page. They are not representative of this scope but of the higher resolution models, somewhat deceptive. The operation buttons are very hard to use with normal size finger tips and impossible to use with gloves. The video/ext. power receptacle and provided cable are a disaster waiting to happen. When the supplied cable with it's long stiff strain relief is installed it sticks straight up 3.5 inches above the scope and just begs to get snagged or banged resulting in either a broken cable plug or worse yet a broken scope receptacle. I contacted Armasight to get some explanation about color palettes and scenario functions and got vrtually no useful information from them other than to contact FLIR to ask those questions. Funny, I thought I bought my scope from Armasight! In retrospect I think I would have spent the same amount for a higher resolution scope with more usable control buttons....
Pros:
  • light weight
  • solid mechanical build
Cons:
  • Hard to use control buttons
  • poor design of video/pwr cable and receptacle
  • low resolution for cost
Best Used for:
  • night time varmint hunting at close range

Hog Hunter

Switched from Night Vision to thermal, Have not been disappointed. It is light weight and battery life is sufficient for a normal hunt. controls can be a bit hard to use in the cold and dead of night. I can detect animals a mile away. the bore sighter feature gets you sighted in quickly. Only downside is that some nights the clarity of the picture is poor, it think due to dust or moisture in the air. I highly recommend this unit if you a looking at night vision. Night vision requires at least Star Light to work. Thermal can be used in the darkest of nights.
Pros: Light Weight,Cost,Setup,Startup
Cons: Buttons,Clarity of image...

Seek and destroy

Before switching night vision for thermal, I read and watched quite a lot of info. And here is what I got. Thermal devices have much more advantages before night vision, but you should understand that first of all it is used for target detection, but not identification. I am a hunter and I dont need to know which exact member of the hogs family I will kill in a few moments or to observe creatures emotions before its pass out. For these purposes you might need night vision and pretty expensive one, because Gen1 and Gen2 wont give you that clear image to identify persons face on long distances. For anything else buy thermal and you wont regret not even once. Zeus is the best you will find in this class....
