Thor 640 2.5X

by JD, from United States, TX Written on March 15, 2015
First, my Thor 640 2.5X is a 2015 model with the latest firmware (software).

I'm very pleased with the performance overall, the big 50mm lens and 640 core give excellent clarirty and range even with the 2X digital zoom engaged you still see above average clarity.

The scope is built like a tank I can't find a weak link to it. The controls are very simple, easy to use and easy to find in total darkness which is very important to me. I like simple and fast without unnecessary functions to slow you down when getting ready to shoot.

The lens focus is nice and doesn't need to be adjusted much, so I pretty much focus it for 75yards and it's good from 25 to past 350+ yards.
I've had zero software issues which is great for any thermal scope. I know ATN has updated the THOR software over the years and it appears they have it about perfect now.

The Arms lever mount works well and returns to zero. I remove and reattach the scope for each hunt and still can hit coke cans with hot water inside at 75 yards.

I like the fact I can save POI settings for different rifles , I have settings saved for my 6.8 cal AR-15' 22 ruger rimfire, and AR-15 9mm carbine so one THOR is like having four thermal scopes!

Overall this is a great product and high end performance for a thermal scope. I'm a very, very, happy hunter!...
Pros:
  • Good price for 640 core thermal
  • Great Clarity
  • Proven design
Cons:
  • Had to buy a better lens cover
  • Mounts alittle low R15 style rifle I used a mount riser
Best Used for:
  • hunting/tactical/operators

Incredible Image

This scope absolutely is amazing. I frankly did not expect to be able to see the resolution that I am getting here. Even at 300 yards I am able to make out some pretty impressive details. I tried some target shooting first and you do have to have something warm. I used a cup of warm water in a paper cup that seems to work well.
Tried hunting with it and the experience is out of this world. Easily picking up target from 100 to 200 yards.
Tons of fun that's all I can say.
Pros: Superb Image
Cons: Would be nice if it was a little less expensive....

I bought the original, top of the line Thor when it first came out. It worked for part of one hunt, until the screws that held the battery door stripped out of the aluminum housing.
They fixed that, but other things went wrong. Then they broke the scope while repairing it and tried to replace it with a new Thor that was 1/2 of the retail value. I pushed and got the scope I'm reviewing. When I first got it, I went to the range, fired - and it turned off. 3 more times, same result. Back to the factory. After repair, it didn't turn off, just rebooted and lost all setting mods. Not only that, but an image of the targets was now permanently showing over the top 1/2 of the screen. Back again. Got it back - didn't reboot, but the image is now mottled and at the lowest brightness setting it looks like it is off. Also, at 8x, the scope was so far off that i couldn't get it on paper at 50 yds; at 2.5x, I could. I normally shoot a 3.5-15x50 Nightforce, and it's reticle barely takes movement from zero to hit dead center at 300 yds, so my picatinny rail is correctly aligned.

So, you may ask, how long did all of this take? Well, we're not done yet, but I bought the scope in January 2011, so just a couple of months shy of 3 years, and I got 2 hours of hunting so far.

Now, I'm not pursing repair anymore. I asked for a new scope this last time and they basically told me to sit on it.

I have been very patient with them. Never threatened, always encouraged them to take w...
