For the sale price a good deal

by merbeau, from United States, TX Written on November 17, 2014
This rest fits in between the entry level rest like Caldwell and the professional rest made by Sinclair, Farley, etc. I purchased the cast iron version from Grizzly who still carries them. Not sure if they have continued the manufacturing or just are selling unsold inventory. Unit comes assembled with exception of windage cradle. Assembly tools are provided. A couple of observations. When attaching the windage cradle to the base make sure to align the key way with the fine elevation adjustment or it will not work (easy to align with coarse elevation if not careful. Secondly, after tightening the knurled nut with provided spanner check to see if the unit moves. If it does, the bevel head nut on the top of the unit needs to be tightened. My unit moved and if that happens loosen the knurled nut, tighten the bevel nut on top and then retighten the knurled nut. The windage elevation control while nice to be at your fingertips is a little coarse but does get the job done. If you want to shoot a hunting rifle the smallest rest Bald Eagle sells (the curved model) is to big and the rifle will not be held tightly. I ended up purchasing a Protektor 1C small leather bag which will hold most hunting rifles. Unfortunately the tabs are to big so the holes will not align with the holes on the unit. You will have to punch holes into the tabs to secure it to the rest. The cast iron unit weighs 21 lbs and is heavy enough to stabilize for bench rest shooting....

Disapointed

I was very excited to get the new BE1006 heavy cast base rest. But it didn't take long not like it when I started adjusting and looking over the elevation. The threaded rod threads are very coarse and wobbly, no real smooth fine adjustment. Then the windage cable is fighting the top rest to turn it back (counter clockwise) off square. Also the adjusting knob at the foot of the stand for windage is in conflict with the elevation break. I was very disappointed for as fare as I'm concerned my old Caldwell BR that I got for 150 bucks works better. Look else ware, I read once, don't monkey around with 2-3-4 hundred dollar rests, spend the money ounce, well this one is going back.
Pros: Heavy
Cons: Elevation adjustment, poor widage control...

great rest

just used it for the 1st time the other day for my 500meter fly shoot (benchrest) and i must say i was impressed.
unpacking the rest from new easy as it comes all set up and just need to adjust and tightened a few things and install the a top sand bag. Cast iron base is nice and heavy/solid on the bench. adjustments are made with ease and the complete unit is stable when set up (not like my old Caldwell one which moves when set up).
love the windage knob being down by front foot and makes for quick adjustments between height and windage and best of all no more stretching to get windage knob like on my old rest.
will be using for F class open also and cant see anything being a problem
Pros: easy to set up, solid construction, position of windage adjuster
Cons: because its a cable that goes from windage knob to base plate when adjusting its not a smooth action but for fine adjustments it great...
