Overpriced and underspec'd

by Legacy Reviewer, Written on July 7, 2014
Brunton transit compasses are by far the most expensive on the market and so you would expect that they would be well thought out, well designed and well made. Unfortunately, they don't tick any of these boxes.

On the 5006LM model, the round level is not attached to inclinometer plate along with the long level, as it is with the 5008 model. It is tucked away under the graduated ring where you can only see half the bubble. Why do this when they have a perfectly satisfactory design in the 5008 model?

The peep sight on the end of the large sight will not turn through a full 90 degrees, so when you fold out the large sight parallel to the compass to take azimuth sightings, you have to squint through the sighting hole at an angle. I can see no technical advantage in not allowing the peep-sight to turn through 90 degrees - so why design it that way?

The graduated ring has the scale in white on a black background. The inside of the compass is basically black with the inclinometer scales in white. The North end of the compass needle is white, which shows up just fine against the generally black background. But the South end of the compass needle is black, so when you need to use the South end of the compass needle to take readings, you cannot see it against the black background! How insane is that?

You can have the compass in any colour you like - so long as it is light grey. C'mon guys, lets have some imagination here....

And you know, the build quality is not that g...

Brunton Pocket Transit

by Legacy Reviewer, Written on January 13, 2011
I previously had an Ainsworth pocket transit and found my Brunton to be much more reliable and sturdy. The Ainsworth needle would get stuck due to the design of the copper coil and wasn't waterproof (even by itself in an airplane cargo hold). I haven't had that problem with the hanging design of the needle. The workings and features are much more fluid than those of the Ainsworth. I was also impressed that for the price, the housing was metal and not plastic as I've seen.
Pros: Sturdy, quality craftsmanship...

IMHO, a properly trained person can use a Brunton more accurately than most folks can use a GPS. I have used pocket transits for years and find taht Brunton is simply the best built and best for the money.
Pros: Accuracy beyond belief
Cons: A bit large in the hand for some folks....

Brunton Pocket Transit

Excellent piece of precision equipment. This instrument can be adapted to the personal preferences of the user. It can be read from either end using the white or black arrows of the needle. This instrument can gain accurate azimuth measurements for landmarks up to 45 degrees above or 15 degrees below the plain of the user.
This instrument also includes an inclinometer which allows the user to measure declination in either degrees or percentage grade. This feature is not only useful for the surveyor but the navigator can use the instrument for estimating height of a target landmark. The instrument also includes a handy trig chart on the cover which gives the sine and tangent of degree measurements to aid in height, triangulation and range calculations.
I would unreservedly recommend this instrument to anyone who wants a quality accurate tool for navigation or survey work.

Pros: Accurate & versatile
Cons: Could include a lanyard attachment on body...
