I ordered the Ares 5 as my 1st "real" telescope.I chose this as it was rated well & the price was what I could afford at this time. Never owning a scope before & doing some reading while waiting for it to arrive,I made myself a collimating cap out of a 35mm film canister the morning of the day it arrived. I found it needed a Very slight adjustment of the primary out of the box.I used it & adjusted the primary in no time, was so easy "a caveman could do it". It got dark & I took her out to look around as the moon was rising behind some trees.Viewed around the sky just scanning with the 25mm lens provided & had a blast just looking with no particular object in mind. Moon came up above the trees giving a full view & WOW!! I was stunned! Not the 1st item on my list to view intentionally but, I enjoyed it so much I switched to the 10mm & regardless of how bright it was,I observed it for a good while using both EP's. Went back to scanning the sky to give my poor eye a break,& ...

Hi: First let me say, this is a good telescope at a good price, I do recommend it as the best telescope one can buy in this price range. At $220, the 6 inch Bushnell Ares Dobsonian represents the competition, a bigger scope but more capable... and also very affordable. I purchased this scope for the purpose of reviewing it. I am a passionate amateur astronomer with a wide range of telescopes and this Bushnell 5 inch F/5 MiniDob looked to me to be the best telescope in this price range. Finding a good quality, reasonably inexpensive telescope is difficult in today's marketplace, I bought it so I could be confident in recommending it. After spending several evenings evaluating the Bushnell Ares 5 inch "MiniDob", I am confident that this is the best telescope that $160 can buy. What you get: This is a 5 inch F/5 Newtonian telescope with a parabolic mirror, all good things. When one is buying a telescope it is important to understand that telescopes are not rated by magnification ...

Pros:  Comes assembled, works very well, compact when collapsed.
Cons:  need a table to use easily since it's so low to the ground
Would recommend:  yes

I purchased 30 of these telescopes for the participants of our summer astronomy workshop. I checked the collimation on each one, and only two were not close. Those two had the secondary stalk come unscrewed. At the star party, the students and teachers were delighted with the views of Saturn, M13, and M27. This is a great starter scope, and great value for the money.

Pros:  well-built, good optical quality, portable
Cons:  only 5" aperture!
Would recommend:  yes

The slide-out design of the truss tube makes this little scope easy to store, easy to transport, easy to use! For the money it is very well-built and the optics are more than acceptable - with a 5mm eyepiece at 130x Saturn was sharp and clear last night, and after collimation I could see nice round Airy discs on stars when the atmosphere settled down. Motion in both axes is smooth with just the right amount of resistance. For a quick grab'n'go scope this beats my 11" SCT hands down! This is going to get a lot of use, I like it better than my AstroScan which cost more and has less aperture.

Cons:  Focus adjuster, light shroud bit small.

Received My ares today, the UPS monkeys knocked it about a bit so it was well out of colmination. Luckily I had also ordered the Celestron tool for this. Colmination took less than 20 minutes. Popped on my Celestron 93230 Variable power eye piece, and noticed the focuser does not quite have enough thread depth to bring it into focus. (IE: screwed all the way out.) Also only having a small shroud around the mirror allows for more cross ways light bleed than I would like. But then for the price the shielding issue is forgivable (Bushnell could have easy done this as almost a complete wraparound.) however the focuser leaves a bit to be desired. if someone made one with perhaps another 1/4 to 1/2 inch of additional threading this would make a huge difference. I'll have to try my Seben Variable eyepiece as this seems to have a slightly shorter length (focal wise, at least on my LX90.) and should allow the focuser to be a bit more screwed in. In sum total, it's not bad and ...

When I got this as a gift for my birthday, I scoffed as I have many telescopes which are way more expensive and from other better known manufactueres, but this bushnell telescope blew me away. It was read to rock right out of the box and I took it out in the field behind my home 2 days after getting it. Great image quality, nice finderscope, over all a fantastic bargain. Thanks to my Great Aunt who bought it for me and to opticsplanet for selling them. I don't see them anywhere else online!

I'm a total newbie when it comes to astronomy but I have used this telescope and I found it very simple to setup and operate. I could definitely see taking this telescope camping too since its relatively lightweight and is collapsed. Im not sure exactly how this stacks up to more expensive telescopes but I saw some cool stuff with it. I would definitely recommend to anyone even mildly interested in checking out the night sky.
