Throwaway Chronograph

by acergeezer, from United States, MA Written on March 31, 2015
I bought this unit because it came with the IR light kit and tripod for about what a competitive unit cost bare-bones. First time out, I hit it with a bullet. Obviously it suffered some physical damage but still powered up-or so I thought. When I contacted the customer service department for a new housing, I was informed they didn't have any, but the CS rep pulled one out of engineering and sent it to me. Great job. Installed the new housing and set up the unit to test. It powered on normally, went through the starting sequence but after 3 seconds gave a "low battery" message. I asked CS for a repair RMA to have the unit repaired. (I wasn't expecting it to be free. After all, I shot it.) I was told they have no repairs available. No spares for purchase, no repair department to send to. Sorry, you're just screwed....

I would not say this is a premium kit.

by Skeeterjeff, from United States, OK Written on February 22, 2015
The tripod broke the first time out of the box. So cheaply made that I just threw it in the trash. I purchased a $30 tripod at Walmart and commenced to use the Chronograph. I could not get the unit to read any of my shots. I read the directions once again and followed them to the letter. Finally, success!

I blame myself for not doing everything as instructed. Be sure to place the unit in the shade and use the supplied infrared lights on the top of the bars with them on and powered by separate batteries....
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • cheap tripod

Does what I bought it for

by JFM, from United States, GA Written on February 18, 2015
I purchased this chronograph for two reasons: a great price and because it would interface with my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 smartphone to record the shot strings. Once I got it set up correctly, it worked great, and it is so convenient to have the info automatically recorded. I just sent it to myself in text format, and then I can work with it on my PC.

It seems, however, that, in every shot string of 10 or more, I will get at least one "du01" error, whatever that means. I haven't investigated it, yet, but it probably means that I have done something wrong.

At this point, anyway, it is a strong "recommend"!...

Buy this Crono

by candrey, from United States, PA Written on February 17, 2015
If you are looking for a crono I would strongly suggest this one. Great quality and works great. Comes in an all in one carry case that is very handy for storage and transport to the range. I especially like the iPhone interface as it gives you all the stats you need for your loads and the stats can be sent to an email address for printing later on. For the price I don't see how you can beat this product....
Pros:
  • Quality
  • iPhone connection
  • Carry case
Cons:
  • Have not found any yet
Best Used for:
  • Reloading

great product!

by phil, from United States, AL Written on February 14, 2015
Very easy to use and connected easily with app on Android S4.have not had opportunity to compare side by side results with other chrony yet but data seems in line. The application is very handy to export results and less cumbersome than having to carry extra pieces of equipment to the range....

Inaccurate

by Adam MacDonald, from Canada, NB Written on October 29, 2014
I tested two of these optical chronographs against a highly accurate acoustic chronograph (4 independent measurements, error standard deviation less than 1 fps) using 44 rounds of hand loaded 308 match ammo. The two Caldwell chronos reported a mean velocity 84 fps and 168 fps higher than the true velocity, and error standard deviation of 15 fps. I would not recommend this for load development....
