Feb 26, 2012 Pros:Lower than average price Cons: "Primer" section gets easily indented by firing pin Would recommend: yes
These snap caps are real snap caps. Meaning they are not just shaped like rounds, but are really constructed of Aluminum and have a primer simulator that is really spring loaded to take the shock of the firing pin. For the money they are worth the price. But I would think if they made the rims and primer sections of this out of brass it would wear better.
The aluminum works okay for checking your weapon function after cleaning etc..but if you use these for excessive dry firing, such as rapid fire or holster drills...they will wear out fairly quickly.
The aluminum rim and primer sections in mine show signs of indentations and dents. Not to the point as I expected but a bit more than expected. This was noticed just with about ten cycles after cleaning several of my handguns. I have these in 9mm and 45 ACP. I also have them in .22 LR but they .22 LR ones are simply dummy rounds made of cast aluminum. I can't say I am surprised at the construction of the .22 LR ones...it would be difficult if not impossible to make .22 LR snap caps with real spring loaded rims.
With the .22 LR snap caps it comes down to the same issue: They use too soft a material for construction.
I believe that they SHOULD use a soft metal to construct snap caps because the whole idea is to protect your weapon's firing pin and extractor. Especially the firing pin! But they should have used a brass compound that would absorb the impact, yet be a little more durable for the expected use.
I still say buy these...they are an inexpensive way to have REAL snap caps on hand to occasionally check your weapon's function safely.
They have come in handy for demonstrating my handguns to friends and family also.
Bean in mind...they will not endure prolonged dry firing.
Hope this helps you.
