Wonderful Telescope

This is our first telescope and for the price we were very impressed with the quality and overall feel. It seems much sturdier and well built than I expected....

Selected 70EQ for tween boys based on it being a refractor scope (good for newbies), available reviews and perceived comparative value. Total setup time about 60 mins, but was not difficult. Tripod is not solid, though vibrations dampen fairly quickly. 70EQ comes w/10mm & 20mm eyepieces. This would have been my "total package" if it had included a quality, shorter (focal length) eyepiece. Sky map kit great for star locating, but excludes planets which are about all that this scope views well.
Pros: Setup, weight, size, ease of use (after a little practice)
Cons: No short eyepiece, sky map excludes planets...

Good beginner telescope

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner from United States, GA Written on January 16, 2010
I purchased this telescope for my 7 year old daughter for Christmas. I had a similar telescope as a kid when I was her age and experienced years of joy with it and wanted to share those with her. The optics provide a reasonable view of easy to find objects. The only two drawbacks are that the red dot spotter scope can be difficult to use to sight in your target. Also, the motion cables for the equatorial mount are a little short, I would like them to be a few inches longer as sometimes I have to take my eye off of the eyepiece because I can't reach them. The equatorial mount is not quite as steady as I would have expected. All in all, my daughter and I have thoroughly enjoyed it with these small drawbacks. A good telescope fo the beginner.
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Mount is a little shaky...

Celestron AstroMaster 70 EQ Equatorial Refractor Telescope 21062

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, WA Written on September 11, 2009
A good basic telescope. Do not expect to be seeing stars in great detail, but one can see the moon clearly.
Pros: Ease of use, price, works well
Cons: Needs larger viewing area/eyepiece...
