Great device offers quick easy alignment

by StarMike, from United States, FL Written on March 9, 2015
This is a great unit. When they first came out Celestron had a lot of issues. Celestron formed a group call TeamCelestron for owners of this device to beta test firmware revisions. I was part of that group and the StarSense unit has matured into a very useful device. If you plan to get this unit, join TeamCelestron (it's free) and make sure you load the latest firmware. When you first get the device and attach it to your scope, do the auto-align. The under the utlilities menu, choose to calibrate the camera (you only have to do this one time). This trains the StarSense unit where the center of your eyepiece is in relation to the StarSense camera, then do another auto-align. This will eliminate a lot of frustration with your gotos. Also, add reference points (hitting align again after the auto-align) in areas of the sky you will be viewing. This will improve the internal modeling the StarSense has done. If you do this, your goto should always have the object in the eyepiece. This is a great unit. I would not want to be without mine. Due to poor weather conditions most of the time here, I don't get out much, so when I do, I don't want to spend my time manually aligning the mount. StarSense does it in under 3 minutes...

For the new guys & girls.

by Casey, from United States, AL Written on January 5, 2015
This takes all the pain out of a great night of stargazing. I am new and it really killed my night to spend half my time in a new site looking for stars and fine tuning, because this doesn't come naturally to the inexperienced. Well worth it. Would do it again without hesitation....
Pros:
  • None
Cons:
  • Little pricy

I have it mounted to a Celestron Nexstar 8SE.
There is a software upgrade available(July 2014) that makes this device really work great.
Since the upgrade...I can now locate objects in the field of view of a 16mm eye piece.
Very useful for Astrophotography finding objects you cannot normally see.
I use a HyperStar from Starizona for my astrophotography and the object I am looking for is always 100% in the FOV...
Best Used for:
  • Astrophography
  • Visual observations
