Cold steel Scottish Dirk

by James, from United States, NC Written on September 7, 2014
Beautiful materials that come together to make a fine looking historical blade. Just not sharp enough out of the box to shave hair or meet my standards. I have never used this blade in a rough manner, but I think it would hold up fine. I purchased it for my collection, what I call a pretty knife. I have carried it on trips simply as a defense weapon. Would I buy another one, depends on how you plan to utilize it. For looks, or historical purposes, or defense it's ok. But if your going to use it to chop trees, then buy an axe or a good camp knife....

Not just a "Dirk", it has some history behind it...

For the uninitiated, the PROPER name for a "Scottish Dirk" is a Sgian Dubh. Pronounced: Skeen Doo.

There were developed in the 18th century when it became poor manners to wear your long sword to the table at another person's home. At first, they were more like short swords, carried in the armpit area, for easy access. Well, since that STILL led to too much bloodshed, THEY were outlawed. So in with the Sock Knife. I guess they figuered if it's out in the open where everybody can see it, what's the harm. Except some of these Sgian Dubh's are wicked long and nasty sharp.
Pros: Size, nice sheath
Cons: Is it properly sharpened?...
