For the uninitiated, the PROPER name for a "Scottish Dirk" is a Sgian Dubh. Pronounced: Skeen Doo. There were developed in the 18th century when it became poor manners to wear your long sword to the table at another person's home. At first, they were more like short swords, carried in the armpit area, for easy access. Well, since that STILL led to too much bloodshed, THEY were outlawed. So in with the Sock Knife. I guess they figuered if it's out in the open where everybody can see it, what's the harm. Except some of these Sgian Dubh's are wicked long and nasty sharp.
