I got this FlIR unit and powered it up immediately. I wanted this for hunting so that I didn't have to point my night vision scope at things I didn't want to shoot, and this unit fits the bill. It is lightweight, portable, and easy to use. I first tried it out in town the night I got it. Church is down the street from me and I could observe cars, and people coming and going. In town there is a lot of heat sources . I tried white hot first. I find that a mid range brightness setting is best. I like white hot for town, and black hot for the woods, and use the red hot first and second setting to confirm that I am seeing a live animal or person. In town there are lots of heat sources. You can see lights, electric boxes, auto tires heat on moving vehicles , city lights, engines that have been running, and heat escaping from homes. you can also see your footprints and heat from where you just put your hand. It does not go through an automobile or other window. In town there is so much heat signature that it is hard to make out humans and you need to cycle through white hot, black hot and red settings to confirm that something is live. The next day I took the PS 24 to my hog stand. I was able to see on a moonless night cows lying in the pasture on my way in, a fox, and a bird or two. I sat in the stand a while and the trees in black hot are dark and the ground looks like white snow. A bear came in after three hours and a living object glows brighter than its surroundings I checked white hot and it glowed way brighter and the first red hot setting showed up good. the next three red settings paint too much red. In that stand I have also seen rabbits, and a bobcat stalk and eat one of the rabbits. I look forward to seeing a hog but will have to spend more time in the stand. The FLIR picks up target to at least 350 yards and I believe farther. This is way farther than the IR beam on my Night Vision scope can see on a dark night under the canopy with my rifle. The battery goes a long time and it is best to scan with the PS 24 every 10 or so minutes. This gets boring but when you spot a hot spot it really energizes me. I ran the unit for about a month using it in the woods four times and about every night for 5 or ten minutes. Going back to my truck I saw round hot spots that were crossing the road and the heat from my truck engine scared me for a minute because it made me think a huge thing was in the road. It was a huge truck not Hogzilla. At night the heat contrast picks up things you will never see with starlight scopes. In daytime you can pick up things as well but you will see anything that is heated up by the sun on a sunny day and I could not see a flock of turkeys visible with my eyes in a warm field so use your eyes as well as the FLIR. When you see something you will need to confirm what is is with your regular night vision to get a positive ID as the FLIR is sort of an undefined image. This is great technology for hunting and to me it was worth the price. The PS 24 took my night vision to a higher level.portable lightweight and easy to scan with. I highly recommend this for anyone who is a Hog or Coyote hunter. They are smart and you will need this edge to hunt them.
