I bought several of the large bags that should weigh ~4.65 pounds each when filled with sand. I wanted more weight than sand can provide so I bought reclaimed lead bird shot from a gun range on a popular auction site (good idea to recycle lead) and saved some money (price of lead has really gone up over the last few years). I found putting 10 pounds of lead in each of the sides for a total of 20 pounds per large bag was just right (plenty of weight without over-stuffing). The bags were still very flexible so they can adjust to stand contours better. To make sure lead dust does not get out of the individual sides, I put those side bags in gallon freezer bags (a little on the large side but quart was not quite large enough).
Finally, there are velcro straps on the top and bottom of the spine so you have several good options for tying these down.
Pros: versatile, double-bagged shot or sand
Cons: nylon bags could still let dust pass...
