I bought mine a year ago and I must have gotten a lemon out of the three other reviewers on this site. My unit when the batteries are good it works like a charm. The only problem I have with mine is that the batteries will not last more than 30 days. It uses 8 AA batteries and that means I have to spend $6-8 a month in batteries for this unit to operate. I have called the manufacturer and they say there is nothing wrong with the unit. I use the recommended battery brand and still it will not last more than 30 days. So I have to use it with the key. I have been considering buying a new one of a different brand and just put this one as additional gun storage and not as my primary home defense safe.
