CMP, here we come!

by DKSmith45, from United States, MI Written on January 18, 2015
Have purchased several "cheaper" scopes; as is typical with most things, and especially true with optics, you get what you pay for. Side by side comparison with a ...lower-end unit shows a dramatic difference in clarity, especially in low light, as well as a distinct advantage in resolution at longer range.
A great scope at an excellent price will now accompany me to Camp Perry for this year's National Matches!...
Pros:
  • Excellent clarity
  • Distinct resolution at longer ranges
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • long range shooting

What you'd expect from Leupold!

by NatKingJoe, from United States, TX Written on December 29, 2014
I've used and or checked out a bunch of spotting scopes over the past 4-5 months and I've found there are a few descent scopes in the $400 to $600 price range. IMO the Leupold SX-1 Ventana to be the best in this price range with the Nikon being a close second and the Vortex close third. The focus/clarity is very good, good enough that it while looking through my friends $2500 Swarovski it was noticeably better, but not Wow better. In order to see the difference it requires a rock sold support and extremely "clean" air. The lightweight polycarbonate body is a plus. With polycarbonate you get a high magnification scope without the added weight. I own many Leupold products and know they will stand behind the SX-1 Ventana if something goes wrong. I also love the eye relief! I gave it 4 Stars as Leupold says Made in USA but box says China......
Pros:
  • eye relief
  • Clarity is great
  • Clarity, 3 to 5 inch eye relief, free scope cover and best price
Cons:
  • Tripod sucks
Best Used for:
  • Range bench shooting

Does the job for me

by gwhelo, from United States, IN Written on November 4, 2014
I was looking for an all around spotting scope. I have several Leupold scopes on my rifles so I thought I would go with Leupold for a spotting scope. The unit is lightweight and is easy to use. It seems to perform well in low light. The included tripod is a table tripod. I have it in my home on a regular camera tripod and it works great. The zoom is smooth and the eyepiece is easy to adjust for viewing and snapping quick photos with an IPhone. I don't use an adapter I just hold the phone with the left hand and snap....

Spotting Scope

by David, from United States, GU Written on October 25, 2014
The scope looks to be an excellent product. I have not had an opportunity to use it yet other than to test it at my home. I travel a lot in my business and it is hard to get to the range, where I plan on using this mainly. The scope itself is high quality construction. The field of view and the magnification is excellent. Good value for the money....

For me, this is the right product at the right price. Excellent field of view, great magnification, light weight and not too bulky. I'm new at this, but I found this unit to be easy to set up and use without much fuss. I'm glad I got the angled viewer, too......
Pros:
  • Affordable
  • lightweight and perfect definition
  • easy to use.
Cons:
  • a bit bulky

Great value

by DaveT, from United States, NC Written on August 4, 2014
Clear concise spotting scope, used at the range today and I could easily see shot placements out to 500 yards. Good eye relief, easy focus and rugged. Everything as advertised. I would recommend this scope. Only thing to watch is the lense covers they are no secured and could easily come off and be lost....
Pros:
  • Cost and Weight
  • Build quality
Cons:
  • None

First Spotting Scope

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner Written on April 14, 2014
This is my first venture into the purchase and use of a spotting scope, for use in sighting-in a rifle. Overall, it has been just what I needed to get an excellent down range picture of my shots up to 200 yds. I have not tried to utilize it beyond that as I do not intend to target anything beyond that distance. Chalk that up to old age and diminished eyesight. The scope is excellent in optic quality for viewing bullet hits clearly and crisply, with its focusing adjustments. I do also like and appreciate the adjustable eye relief provided on the eye piece. Some reviewers have been critical of the quality of the hard case, but in my opinion, its quite adequate for the purpose and provides a good secure storage. It appears to be well padded, with foam to protect the scope from most general bumps and thumps. Is it going to hold up to the type of handling and trashing by airport baggage handlers? No, its not, but I don't think thats what Leupold had in mind in the design. My main criticism is that either the tripod does not provide a good support at bench level, for the size of the scope, or the scope to tripod mount cannot be tightened enough to keep even a mild breeze from causing the scope to shake and creating difficulties in good steady visual field. Other than that, I think it was a great purchase for my purposes and needs. Bottom line you really can't go wrong with a Leupold product.
Pros: Usual Leupold Quality
Cons: Tripod to scope connection could be better...

Leupold Spotting Scope

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner Written on August 23, 2013
Expected better resolution at highest power. I put UV lens filters on all good glass if possible. If I get a scratch I don't want it on the high dollar glass. This scope doesn't appear to be threaded for that purpose.
Pros: Fairly crisp image at 100 yards
Cons: Not threaded for lens filter to protect glass...
