It is just a metal ring that screws into the ocular end of the scope, and has a little rubber edging to it. If you get hit in the eye from recoil and get hurt, ask Leupold what happened. If you've ever been bumped by your scope for whatever reason, heavy magnum recoil, shooting up hill, real spongy recoil pad, or etc. Put a rubber eyepiece guard on your scope and don't worry about getting hit in the face by a thin metal edge. These fit perfect, they just thread in to the eye piece and look like it was made on the scope.
