There are 7 brightness setting with an "off" position in between each one to avoid cranking the selection knob to reach desired setting every time. Bring the Leupold supplied micro torx wrench with you to the range,nothing else fits to make your sight adjustments. Once sighted in then forget everything. When you pick up your rifle the motion turns on the red dot,the scope is always on. If you want the illuminated reticle then an intuitive knob turns it on. There is an "off" function between each level of brightness so your usual level is always one click away. My nine year old daughter had it mastered in 30 seconds. I liked it so much I bought a second one a few weeks later.
