Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x20mm (30mm) Metric Matte Rifle Scope Illum. German #4 Dot Reticle

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, WA Written on January 16, 2012
Its ideal for rapid target acquisition on dangerous game, especially with the illuminated red dot. You can transition through light and dark backgrounds as the animal is moving, and just keep the dot on the animal's vitals. Wherever the dot is, that's where the bullet hits. It keeps it simple and easy and accurate in an exciting (and maybe dangerous) moment when you need utmost simplicity. No centering crosshairs, no holdovers, no looking at busy reticles -- just put the dot on the place where you want the bullet. On 1.5x you can keep both eyes open (which I always do with any scope)and track the target almost like open sights. 1x-5x would be even more ideal, but 1.5x-5x is pretty close. It has excellent eye relief (long), especially on 1.5x. That's very important on big kickers like a .505 Gibbs, or .458 Lott`or even a .375 H&H Magnum. The illuminated German #4 dot reticle is the best dangerous game reticle I've ever seen. You want certainty and simplicity when something big and dangerous is closing on you fast. Those qualities are multiplied when you need a second or even a third quick, follow-up shot. At that point just putting the dot on the center of mass is what counts most.
Pros: Ideal for rapid target acquisition on dangerous game
Cons: Ideal would be 1x-5x power...

A great scope with only one small drawback.

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, CA Written on September 15, 2011
I purchased this scope for use on a dangerous game large-magnum-caliber rifle for a hunt in Africa. It performed very well, especially in low-light, and it was the envy of the professional hunters and guides.

However, note that above about magnification 4x the eye relief becomes too short to safely use it on a large magnum rifle. While it didn't actually hurt me, it did smack my safety goggles pretty good during testing, and if I didn't have a good grip on the rifle it could have had more serious consequences.

Also, please note that if you want to get a Leupold Alumina flip-up scope cover for this objective, none of the standard sizes work. You have to order the cover direct from Leupold, as it's an unusual size that no one sells for some reason. I went through three sizes of cover before I figured that out.
Pros: clear image, great illumination, quick to use
Cons: eye relief is marginal at high magnification...

Good Scope

The people of Opticsplanet.com are great...only place I buy my scopes!
Great quality scopes. Some improvements over the VX III illuminated such as a better illuminated dial system. Very clear scope.....it is expensive and Leupold may start pricing themselves out of my range and start looking at Nikon. Either way, I will buy from Opticsplanet.com!
Pros: Clear, great quality, crisp illuminated reticle
Cons: short battery life...

Leupold Rocks

This scope is made to withstand punishing recoil. I load 50 Alaskan rounds pushing a 500 gr solid to 2125 fps which yields 5012.34 ft-pds of energy and a Taylor knockout of 74. The scope is so clear and sharp. As a bonus the circle-dot is a range finder. Great product.
Pros: Extremely sharp optics, stands up to 50 Alaskan rounds
Cons: Should be sold with the Leupold Alumina Flip Back Lens Cover Kit...

Scope looks much better than its 1 inch tube non-illuminated reticle version. Good scope but you pay for it.
Pros: Illuminated reticle looks good
Cons: Had some trouble getting it to fit right on my AR but it looks great now...
