VX-R FireDot Duplex is superb in low-light conditions

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner from United States, MI Written on October 22, 2013
FireDot Duplex Reticle offers (8) brightness settings and enables quick acquisition of your point of aim. Where I deer hunt it's fairly thick cover, which means I usually lose sight of normal crosshairs before the end of legal shooting light. Thanks to the VX-R, I'll always be confident of my aim point when "Mr. Big" shows up!
Pros: Never lose the crosshairs in low-light again

I feel like I'm missing something (Up dated)

by Legacy Reviewer, Written on April 24, 2013
When I was able to get the MOA info, I had to find an MOA to inch calculator on line, and then I could see how closely my rounds could theoretically match to the reticle. For other people who need this info, the scope should be zeroed at 200 yrds, but I find that zeroing at 50 yrds, is just like zeroing in at 200 yds, with what I use. The bottom of the circle represents 2.2 MOA, then the next two marks are 4.8 MOA, and then 7.8 respectively. So good for,300, 400, and 500 yrds. It makes for a great match to 55 grn 223/5.56. Only off by 6 inches low at the 500 yrd mark, on the trajectory chart, after crunching the data. This is a solid 4 star scope, just wish I didn't have to work so hard finding range data.
Pros: Very good quality for the money.
Cons: Adjustment dials not very positive, not much data, info etc....

I feel like I'm missing something.

I feel like the quality of the scope is awesome. Very clear, and can't beat Leupold's forever warranty. On the negative side, although the reticle has ballistic hash marks and a large circle in the reticle, there is no data, describing the range those hash marks are to be used, for various bullet calibers and weights. Of course, different calibers, weights, and designs of bullets can vary a lot, and I feel like a highly generalized ballistic reticle is useless and pointless, unless the company offers a program like Nikon's "Spot On" software, to determine the distance to use your ballistic aiming points more accurately. Leupold is behind in this area. So, I believe this scope's ballistic reticle can't be used to its potential, beyond 300 yards, for the .223 and 30-06 calibers I use it for, which is sadly a waste to me. .223, and 30-06, have close enough trajectories out to 300 yards, depending on the bullet weights, but can have a 5 or 6 inch drop difference at that distance. I can live with that,if I have a shot at game at that distance or closer. Beyond 300 yards, is when 55 grain - 180 grain bullets start to show too much difference in drop, to go with such a generalized reticle. It's just a crap shoot, and I don't have a range nearby, past 100 yards to confirm where my rounds are hitting in relation to the reticle's aiming points. Besides, these days, bullets are scarce, and expensive. Having software to help you place your reticle in the correct spot, at the correct dist...

I'm very happy with this scope, it's my first Leupold and I'm planning on fitting some of my other guns with the same. Yeah it's a little pricey but well worth it if your serious about hunting.
