As good as it gets

by Tennessee Hunter, from United States, TN Written on February 9, 2015
Bought this scope for a "walking varminter" Kimber 84M in 22-250. Was a little worried about having a 14X on the high end of the magnification without an adjustable objective but mirage hasn't been an issue as of yet. I don't plan on shooting 1000 yards anyway but a 500 yard poke at a furbearing varmint is certainly feasible with this setup. Was also a little worried about the light transmission at high end in low light conditions but the scope is actually brighter than my old eyes are in low light. I can't figure it out but I can tell you that I can see through this scope in low light when I can't see with my naked eyes (actually wearing glasses but you get the jist). There are probably better options for prairie dog hunters and the like but my varminting is limited to coyotes, fox, buzzards and armadillos. Ordering the CDS dial today and looking forward to experimenting with that new toy. I love the idea of a 400 yard zero with a click stop for 450 and 500 yards. I am cheating a little on the range because all the shots are in 40 acre plots with baited corners and the longest shot will likely be 440 yards from a rest off the top of a round bail. Kinda cheating I guess but I see no need to make the critters suffer when I can get comfy and make quick and clean kills. Haven't used this in the field yet, just punching holes in paper and working up handloads but the scope is a keeper and for the money I don't think there is a better buy out there. If there is, let me know!...
Pros:
  • Bright and clear
  • Plenty of magnification in a small package
  • No need for an adjustable objective with this scope
  • Mirage has not been an issue
  • Perfect scope for a 22-250 coyote/fox walking varminter
Cons:
  • I wish they came 2 to a package for the same price

Everything You Would Expect in a Rifle Scope

by Doug, from United States, CT Written on December 29, 2014
I've come to expect a lot from my sporting optics and this Leupold scope delivers. Well constructed, clean/bright optics and ease of use. This is also a goo looking scope that complements the overall appearance of the rifle. I considered other products, namely Nikon and Zeiss - couldn't really go wrong with either, but I chose the Leupold and don not regret the decision....

Great optics

by AR guy, from United States, VA Written on November 21, 2014
The VX-3 has glass that's bright and clear. I've got a Leupold Mark 4 L/RT (a bit more expensive). While the Mark 4 is a bit better -- not by that much. And, as I mentioned, I paid A LOT more for the Mark 4. I've got the VX-3 mounted on a Remington 700. Nice, tight shot groups. Would definitely recommend....

Good Scope but Diminishing Returns per Dollar

by JLC, from United States, IA Written on September 6, 2014
This is a Leupold scope and is well constructed as are all Leupolds.
Comparing this against a Leupold VX-1 it replaced, the clarity and resolution is better but not stunningly so. Compared against a VX-2 very little difference. That probably says as much about the lower-priced Leupolds as it does about the VX-3. For low-light use all of them are usable down to most legal shooting hours anyway.

You do get the twin-bias erector assembly and that is a good thing especially for heavy-recoiling calibers.

The scope cover provided with the VX-3 is cheesy. Gets in the way cleaning and picks up solvents. I much prefer the simple bikini covers that come with the other lines.

Got the CDS option for this. I suppose it will be useful. But I have been trying to contact Leupold to get a dial and I refuse to spend an hour on hold. Why they can't provide a simple Web-based order-entry form is a mystery. It's not rocket science it's just ballistics. If you buy this scope in September to hunt with it in October good luck. First you have to get customer support then wait 6 weeks to get the dial. There must be some little old guy with a jewelers' lope tuck in his eye engraving the dials....
Pros:
  • Leupold Quality
  • Twin Bias Erectors
Cons:
  • Low Value per Dollar
Would recommend: No

Quite Probably my All-Time Favorite Scope

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, IL Written on May 28, 2014
While one of my favorite scopes is Leupold's VX 3,3.5-10x40mm, this 4.5-14X40mm model may surpass it only because of the additional power factor. It's easy to overscope one's rifle, meaning that too much magnification can be a detriment depending upon one's intended use and shooting style. In this case, I can use the lower settings for general target shooting and then crank it up for benchrest applications, making it extremely versatile. This scope is a tremendous value for the money because it performs every bit as well, if not better, than many European models costing a lot more. The optics are crystal-clear, the windage and elevation controls are strong, reliable and robust, the scope is as tough as a Delta Force operator, is American made and comes with Leupold's iron-clad lifetime warranty. You can't go wrong with any VX 3 scope.
Pros: Extreme quality and optical clarity, tremendous value for the money, unsurpassed strength and durability, unequaled accuracy and reliability
Cons: Absolutely none...
