Easy to use

by Dougy, from Australia, Queensland Written on August 29, 2014
After having read all the reviews, it appeared that this was the unit to get, although my friends all opted for the smaller Gen6 I am glad i went this one, as you can save all the load data in the memory, no more bits of paper on the reloading bench,

Dispenses in the perfect time, as its decanting the powder i am loading the projectile and seating and putting in the box just as it beeps to say the next one is ready

Deadly accurate every time, you cant go wrong with one of these,...
Pros:
  • Too many to list, but first would be the time saving
Cons:
  • None

Great reloading tool for the bench!

by Felix Lee, from United States, CA Written on August 6, 2014
I've had this Lyman Gen 5 for a few months now. I originally wasn't sure whether I'd get the RCBS Chargemaster 1500 or this Lyman unit, since I couldn't justify the additional $100 for the RCBS unit, I chose this one. Setup is pretty straightforward with all calibration and setting changes explained step by step in the included manual. I usually allow the unit to warm up for 3 minutes upon turning it on and calibrate it with the 50g weight every time it's used. I haven't used that many variations of types of powders besides flake powders, but seems to work well and I haven't had too much of an issue with the dispensing. Since the accuracy is rated at ±0.1 grains, I sometimes get powders dispensed -0.1 under and rarely +0.1 over the input dispense weight, but isn't an issue for me just to re-pour the powder into the reservoir and re-auto dispense. I think other factors causing this might be air circulation around my workplace, how sturdy my reloading bench is where this unit is sat, and the type of powder(s) I am using. So far it is serving me well, and I hope it continues to do so for at least several more years....

Excellent Tool

This is a well designed machine, it cut my reloading time by at least half, especially when you load large number of ammo. Here is what I do, I set it on auto-recharging, load one case, put the pan back on the scale, then seats the bullets. when I finish, the next charge of powder is just about ready. Very convenient and useful tool.

Very nice instrument

The Lyman gen. 5 comes as advertised. I currently reload rifle and handgun using a single stage system. The lyman gen.5 was easy to set up, looks and appears sturdy (made mostly of plactic) and was fun to use. Cut my powder -bullet seat time in half easy. A bit on the pricey side but very happy with unit overall. Only downside is the removal of powder from the reservoir when finished with project. Follow instructions exactly on this to avoid the mixing powders. I would recommend this product.
Pros: Accurate, fast, nicely build
Cons: Clean up...

I wanted to buy this when Lyman had the old DPS III. By the time I figure I would purchase this, they came out with this Gen 5.

Optic Planet was about the only one who had any left and going quickly. "I like how you can check how many are in stock here"

I got this pretty fast, packaged nice and safe. Instructions very easy to follow but make sure you do read them.

Keep in mind, the 3 minute warm up is necessary although you can disable it, its recommended you use it. You will have a count down timer actually, and beeper which you can change setting/loudness or even off. Also, when you turn off, make sure you always unplug it. If you dont and later turn back on it will not go through the 3 minute warm up and just go directly into mode for use.

Calibration is simple and good, also recommended you do before use, which may as well, your weight is right there.

This is not a con, but I will like to say I kind of wish the powder reservoir "tube" could be connected to the back when not in use. Or at least dust cover fits over top of it. Comes with a dust cover which you need to disassemble the reservoir for it to fit. So when you store it with the dust cover the powder tube kind of goes homeless so to speak.

Power adapter is even stored in a side compartment which is nice so you dont lose it while storing.

But I will say this about the powder tube reservoir, the old DPS III had a taller but more narrow one which seemed like it could be easily tipped if not caref...
