I use this scope with the Nikon 13X - 40X zoom eyepiece (part # 7467). I've not tried using it in low light situations, but during daylight I cannot see any difference in image quality between this scope and the Nikon Fieldscope III 60 mm ED. Yet it is ½ the weight and over 3 inches shorter than the larger, and costlier model.
Focusing is smooth and easy. At 40X magnification, focusing gets a bit critical – but is still easily accomplished. There is no lens or image creep at any viewing angle. At a measured distance of 250 yards the image, at 40X, is crystal clear with no distortion whatsoever.
Its one drawback (as is the case with angled spotting scopes in general) is that it needs an attached device to assist with rapid image acquisition. Nikon provides such a device on several less costly spotting scopes but omits one from expensive model.
The soft carrying case is adequate and will offer good mechanical protection for the objective lens - but essentially no protection for the eyepiece (other than to cover it and shield it from rain and snow). That is another Nikon oversight... but takes nothing away from the scope itself.
All in all, this is a wonderful spotting scope. When paired with the 13X - 40X eyepiece, it is a real winner. If you want great optics and the ultimate in portability, this scope warrants your consideration - especially if low light viewing is not an issue for you.
Pros: Excellent optics, light weight, compact
Cons: No built-in ...
