I called Optics Planet to order a Leupold VXlll with 4-14 for shooting 250-350 yards. When I asked if there was another scope of comparable quality the Rep suggested the Nikon Monarch 2-10. I mounted the scope and it is not what I want. It isn't nearly as clear as the Leupold, it doesn't focus as well especially at long ranges, and I can't return it!!! I'm stuck with it. I will think twice about ever asking a rep their opinion again. I ended up NOT SAVING ANY MONEY, RATHER I WILL NOW SPEND ANOTHER $500+ to buy the scope I want.
Leupold does cost more, but when I compare the two scopes side by side, the images at 300 yards are not the same.
I've asked several people to give their opinion (covering both scopes to avoid prejudging) and 7 people agree that the Leupold has better focus at long range, and the detail is more sharp.
Nikon's are bright, at mid day at close range there aren't many differences, but where it matters, at long distances at low light, the Leupold is better.
Thanks ...

Pros: Wide field of view, bright & clear, light-weight, great adjustment range, mildot reticle
Cons: The ONLY negative is that the threads for one of the turret covers are just a TINY bit rough
Would recommend: yes

Truly an EXCELLENT scope for the money! And this is from a longtime exclusive Leupold owner. I'll put this scope up to even the Leupold Vari-X III's and VX-III's. The Nikon has a better power range, wider field of view, and equal or better brightness and image quality. The image is VERY bright and clear and the mildot reticle is terrific for long range shooting, IF you take the time to learn how to use it (the scope comes with an excellent tutorial on mastering the mildot reticle).
The reticle was in perfect focus with the image, right out of the box, and I didn't have to mess with it like what is now usual with the Leupolds. And more importantly, the click adjustments are more accurate than any of my Leupolds, therefore making it much quicker to sight in.
I will definitely be buying more Nikon Monarch scopes.
