Klebanoff's Review of Nikon P-223 3-9x40 BDC 600 Rifle Scope
Having been a fan of Nikon optics for years, I bought the scope and Nikon mounts from Optics Planet in a package deal to put on a SIG 556. The scope is excellent. The Nikon mounts are worthless! Do NOT buy them! You will be sorry if you do.
The bottom piece of the mount--that is, the part designed to clamp onto the rail--is forged out of a single piece of metal. The HUGE disadvantage of such a design may not be readily apparent, but trust me they suck! The one piece design makes it physically impossible to separate the bottom of the mount and slip it over the rail; rather you have to start at either end of the rail, wiggle the mount onto the rail, and then slide it to the desired location.
One problem is that Nikon mounts are too small to accommodate many AR rifle rails. They wouldn't fit my SIG rails. They wouldn't fit the rails on my Rock River Coyote Rifle either.
In addition, I have to question the integrity of such mounts even on a rifle capable of accepting them. Because the base of the mount is a single piece of metal, it's difficult to imagine it gripping a rail very securely even if the fastening nuts are firmly tightened.
I threw them out and bought Rock River mounts, which are very rugged and of exceptional quality.
Again, the scope is excellent. You will be very happy with it. Just don't buy the mounts!
