Good value

by Ted, from United States, CA Written on August 29, 2014
The PVS14 is a government owned and therefore public design.
As long as the components used are the same, it doesn't matter too much who assembles it.
OPMOD uses the Pinnacle G3 tube from the same manufacturer as the top companies so the guts of the thing are the same. Same design, same performance, much cheaper. What's not to like?...
Pros:
  • good quality
  • good value
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • general use

Great deal - Stereo Nightvision

by godfrey1988, from United States, CA Written on August 26, 2014
Great product. I had a single PVS7 with Pinnacle and wanted to do some nighttime driving and navigation in the desert and went with a dual PVS-14 setup. The helmet mounts amounted to $800, which included a helmet dovetail mount and a dual PVS-14 mount.

Great clarity. The only issue that I had was that one of the tubes was not up the spec of the other tube but it was very hard to tell....

Own the night, inpect carefully upon arrival

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner from United States, NC Written on May 25, 2014
Compared to three different Gen 1 units the detail and clarity were amazing.
It didn't appear to be assembled in a clean-room due to three hairs/fibers and two black spots of debris (they could be seen on the inside of the lens with it powered off) in the center of the field of view. When I returned the unit it took around a month to get my $$$$$ back. Because of these I purchased a PVS-14 P+ with gun mount and a 10yr warranty elsewhere for $200 more.
Pros: Visual details
Cons: debris in unit...

I decided to use this product for 6 months before writing this comprehensive review.

Items that come with the PVS-14 device:
Comes with a clear lens cap for protecting the actual lens while wearing the product outdoors, and also comes with a black plastic cap that can be used in excessive light conditions, and also protects the primary lens. The demist lens works well also. The rubber eye piece also fits well, both to the face, and on the PVS-14, and is of good construction. Comes with the J-Arm and the "skull-crusher" head mount. Works well. The head mount is not quite as uncomfortable as the name implies, older models were worse. It fits tightly and snugly and secures the PVS-14 in place well. If you're not afraid of "arts&crafts", the mount can be at-home modified with velcro and soft sole shoe inserts cut to fit. Not very beautiful, but effective at decreasing the loss of blood circulation around your skull and the migraines that accompany that. The bag that comes with the device is of good, solid construction and has several separated and useful compartments, including one velcro-sealed interior pouch for holding extra batteries. I do carry the bag attached to my waist-belt while I hike, to store the NVG device and the head harness until I choose to put them on. Also comes with the user's manual and a booklet of high-quality lens-cleaning fabric.
Pros:
The PVS-14 itself definitely allows me to see in the dark very, very well, and works great with other infra-red light devices. By the way, if you shine an IR light into the eyes of a person or anima...

Outstanding Value

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner from United States, CA Written on February 24, 2014
This unit I have is the second OPMOD I have owned. My first had to be returned due to a bright spot emission point that popped up after a few weeks. This was a fault with the tube maker, not optics planet but they took care of it immediately for me. My current unit is outstanding and its tube's specs exceed OMNI IIV contract, which is the best 'mil-spec' there is, and there are no blackspots in the center image, and all spots that do exist in view are very fine. Optics planet's warranty is just as long as any other pvs-14 retailer and in my experience there customer service is top notch.
Pros: I recieved unit that exceded OMNI IIV specs tube...

Another Quality product from OpMod at great value

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, CA Written on February 4, 2014
I highly recommend this PVS-14. Before purchasing I spent about 7 hours of research and looking at various night visions offered from different online shop and learning everything I can. By far this is the best value at excellent quality with the needed features. I ended up using this item during a class and held up great and no problem at all.
Pros: Quality glass, great value, clarity, easy to use
Cons: buzzing noise from auto gate ...

Opmod PVS-14

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner Written on January 3, 2014
Headgear is painful to use. In fact, I would call it "unusable"
The PVS14 3P is absolutely amazing and with a decent ir illuminator ($90)this is scary good!
In fact, I like it better than my Armasight FLAG (gen4). Manual gain is helpful in my application (varmints)...
Pros: This unit rocks! Visibility is excellent out to 350 yds.
Cons: the ir illuminator is ok for basements but not much past 10 yds....

Watch out if you purchase these!

by Legacy Reviewer, Written on December 31, 2013
I recently purchased a set of these and was not very satisfied with the quality. I returned them within the 30 day money back guarantee timeline expecting a refund of my purchase price ($2,895). Instead I received an email from Opticsplanet informing me the device worked fine and I needed to provide them my return mailing address and means to pay for shipping the device back to me. If I did not reply within 7 days, they would assume I didn't want the device and would not be refunding my money either. To say this is a bit unsettling is an understatement.
DO NOT PURCHASE ANY HIGH DOLLAR ITEM FROM THIS COMPANY AND EXPECT THEM TO HONOR THEIR MONEY BACK GUARANTEE!...

Maybe I got a bad one....

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, WA Written on November 22, 2013
While the image was bright and clear, even in a dark room (It had pretty good specs ftom ITT), the tube had a fairly large blemish in Zone 1, almost dead center of the image. While I understand that blemishes are an inherent part of the manufacturing process, this tube should have been sold as grade B. Additionally, the whine coming from this tube was beyond unacceptable. Again, I know whine is part of having an autogated tube, but in a completely black room, I could hear the high-pitched squeal from over 20 feet away. There is no way I could use this tube while hunting coyotes and pigs at night. Maybe others have had better experiences, but OPMOD struck out on this one.
Pros: Price for Gen III PVS-14
Cons: Zone 1 blemish and incredibly loud whine...
