Nice Try - Improvement Needed

by hoosier, from United States, IN Written on February 26, 2015
Great service and super fast delivery from OpticsPlanet.

Product not so good. Nice try, but falls short in some areas. This cooler is sturdily built from mostly good materials, but a couple of design/manufacturing flaws significantly reduce its utility.

It would help with insulation and convenience if the cooler were watertight – unfortunately it is a long way from that – despite the impressive looking rubber seal around the lid. I put a couple of gallons of water inside and closed the lid, then tipped the cooler in all four directions. There were significant leaks (approx. one pint per minute) from 3 of the sides (back, front, right) and a horrendous leak from the left side – probably gushing out at a rate of four pints per minute.

Examination of the sealing surface (top of base and lid) revealed significant undulations in the top of the base. It appears that the box is manufactured as a hollow unit and then filled with foam. The foam must be injected in as a liquid and then expands to fill the void between the walls of the box. Unfortunately it is like the foam you spray into the gaps around your house (windows and doors) – spray in too much and the frames start bulging out. So, the top of the box is uneven and the lid seal cannot cope with the amount of undulation. Result = no seal, and any water inside will gush out fast when the box is tipped.

I emailed Pelican about this problem one month ago – no response. Looks like I’ll be left to fix it myself – thinking of impr...

Ice Keeper

by Sailor, from United States, ID Written on February 10, 2015
Summer five day roundup and branding Eastern Montana, 100+ days. A sturdy cooler to keep the block ice and food, chip the block to feed the beverage cooler. Summer days on the river in (family unfriendly word) Canyon of the Snake River, 100+, my neighbor, a guide and owner of America's Rafting Company was appreciative of the quality of this cooler....

Destroys the yeti

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, TX Written on March 30, 2014
Take my word for it, this thing LOL beats the yeti, two of my friends have them and it is built so much better, the handles are amazing the cooler looks beautiful, pictures don't do it's justice, and holds so much drinks. The only bad thing is it is to heavy, but tbh I really don't care that it is. And another thing, optics planet got it to me two days after I ordered it! Keep up the good work guys.
Pros: Extremely well built, latches , handles
Cons: HEAVY ...

If your looking for an extreme duty cooler, buy this. Yeti's are nice but this cooler has alot more features and holds ice longer. The only down side is its heavy but no one is going to run off with it. Holds ice for 7 days in my truck bed in South Carolina heat in August. Enough said.
Pros: Holds ice really well.
Cons: Heavy as lead. ...
