I never thought I would spend this kind of money on hearing protection. I had purchased a highly recommended electronic hearing protection for around $70. The first time I went to use them they literally fell apart. Great when you are first up at a match. I started researching options and everything lead to Pro Ears. I choose this model because lithium batteries are reliable and I have a supply for other devices. I also liked that I could order a set of over the head bands as an option if I did not like the behind the head setup. I finally got to use them this weekend. First they did not fall apart when I tried to put them on. I set the volumes at about the middle and went from there. After awhile I noticed that I was not hearing any of the usual noise I was hearing with other units. The sound was natural and just the shot noise was suppressed. The ear pieces were comfortable, the only issue was the typical sweating within the earmuffs that happens after wearing them for hours. ...

A great set of headphones, however a little tight on the head. My hat size is 7-1/4 which is pretty average and I find the shape of the band to be too "pointy" thereby causing the headphone to put pressure on the crown area of the head. After prolonged use it tends to cause a headache. This is the only reason these headphones didn't get 5/5 stars. I love the headphones other than this. Top notch sound quality, however if I had it to do again, I would go with the behind the head model.

Pros:  Independent controls, great sound reduction & quick recovery
Cons:  Tough to wear a hat, needs mark for off position
Would recommend:  yes

After buying several other electronic muffs, these have been the best. Nice having independent controls, just remember to turn off both sides. I added a paint dot to visually see that they are turned off. I can wear a full brim hat with them but it rides a little high. No problem with sound recovery or carring on a conversation while someone is shooting. Easy to hear SO and timer during a match. They are expensive but with a lot of shooting, I wanted to keep my hearing.

Pros:  Simple, amplifies normal conversation well
Cons:  does not suppress loud noise enough
Would recommend:  no

I did not get the chance to evaluate the performance of the electronics in these muffs because so much sound was already penetrating the housing. You really notice it when switching from foam ear plugs (NRR of about 32) to these ear muffs (NRR 26). I understand that NRR 26 is substantially less than 32, but I doubt these units even rate at 26. I used them while shooting my 45 auto at an indoor range and the noise level was too high. I had to supplement the muffs with foam plugs, which defeats the reason I got these expensive devices. I should have known given the small size of these muffs and the electronics and batteries they have to hold, there is not much room left for sound insulation padding. I considered exchanging them for the larger & heavier NRR 33 model but given the one poor review it received (for the same high-noise reason) I am not sure it would help.

Pros:  Excellent quality great fit and comfort safe and enjoyable to use
Cons:  not cheap
Would recommend:  yes

Everything about the Pro Ears Gold ear muffs is positive except the price. They work as described and compress loud sounds instead of annoying clipping or turning off and on like other electronic ear protection. The fit is very comfortable and easily adjustable. The headband cover and ear cup pads are nice soft leather that cushions well and feels nice against the head and ears even when used in 91 degrees and 88% humidity all day while teaching a handgun class. The sound is easily adjustable and is better the regular hearing while blocking out loud sounds from being uncomfortable but still able to be heard. I left them on all day except lunch and never noticed the weight or feel. Great product highly recommended for instructors or students taking a shooting class or training with another person or persons. They are not cheap in feel or price but still a value.

Best ear protection and perfect for rifles! It's great to be able to hear voices while you're shooting and still have gun sounds silenced.
