Great little light

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner from United States, AL Written on July 18, 2011
As a small, super bright carry-light, the Streamlight ProTac 1AA Tactical Light is great. One firm press on the tail switch is all it takes. However, the strobe and low output settings are achieved by pressing the switch button twice or three times within split-second time limits, without doing it so hard as to latch it "on", or too lightly while working against a firm switch spring. It is difficult to do and usually takes me several tries to get it to set to strobe or low light. If those alternate settings are very important to you, I recommend stepping up to another model that has a separate selector switch.

The case has a velcro belt loop which can be used to attach it to anything small enough for it to encircle, like a wheelchair, a backpack, a purse, etc. It's a nice feature, along with the pocket clip. And who doesn't keep AA alkaline batteries available?

The AA battery, compact size, high output, rugged construction and price were major decision points for me to purchase this light. I would have rated it as all 5-stars except for the switch setting difficulty described above.
Pros: Very small yet very bright, and uses only 1-AA battery
Cons: Alternate switch settings very difficult to set,...

Stopped working

Streamlight was easy to deal with and the second tech repair person took care of me by telling me about the tail cap switch issue and mailing one to me. (I have not received it yet so I don't know if that will fix it or not). The first person at stream light, some guy, told me to send it back to Optics Planet as it was only two weeks old. But first I decided to call streamlight to see if any quick fix might be available and to save the cost of the shipping and the trouble. The second tech person I talked to when I called back, a lady who was quite helpful, told me of the switch issue that they were aware of. I'll see what happens and report. Optics Planet was awesome to deal with, Great customer service, free shipping and my order arrived in 22 hours via UPS or FedEx I can't remember now. I will use Optics Planet next time FOR SURE.
Pros: small and bright on only one AA battery
Cons: stopped working after 2 weeks...

Big Features, Small Package

This is a great little tac light. It's very bright for its size, but has its limits. You're not going to use this light for long distances or large areas. I use it mostly for a home/hotel room defense light. I'm an NRA instructor and use this light for training self-defense classes.

The high setting is very bright once your eyes are night-adjusted. THe low setting is bright enough at night to navigate around the house. The strobe feature has limited uses (alerting, disorienting someone?), but is a nice inclusion. The ProTac 1AA is weather-proof. I tested this by using the light under a stream of water at all angles. No problems. The end cap switch is easy to use and intuitive; partial depression quickly to change modes, then a full depression to stay in the selected function. The rim of the light has notches that let light escape. This is good in two ways, it lets you know if the light is on if you happen to set it down on the lens-end, as well as helping control the amount of light by placing a finger over the lens.

This is just the flashlight I was waiting for from Streamlight. If you need something brighter or bigger, they have the 2AA model as well as two lithium cell models.

Highly recommended.

Optics Planet was great as well, shipped it as soon as they became available (I pre-ordered) with emails to keep me up-to-date on status. The only thing that wasn't clear on the website was the fact that it was a pre-order (I knew this going in though).
