Tele Vue Powermate line consists of a negative doublet plus a positive "pupil-correcting" doublet. Pros:  sharp flat image
Cons:  pricey but worth it

I'm new to astronomy (nothing to compare this to), but I have read much before making this purchase and I am not disappointed. I have only used this with a small APO refractor (Orion EON 72mm). Terrestrial use also yields very good results. Stacking the 5x with the 2.5x Powermate resulted in only fair (at best) results - yes, I know, but I had to try. Fit and finish are excellent. If you own an SLR, I recommend the T-ring adaptor as well.
