Best Handgun Night Sight

by RegT, from United States, MT Written on October 16, 2014
I'm a former peace officer, having started with the San Diego Police Department and finished with the California Highway Patrol, in Communications. I have been a shooter for over forty years. Serious shooters, especially those whose lives depend on their skills, are familiar with the mantra, "Front sight - press". Focusing on the front sight while lining it up with your intended target is key.

Night sights are meant to give you the best chance of hitting in low light situations (yes, we still need to be certain what we are shooting at, as well as considering where that bullet will end up if you miss your intended target). One of the problems with shooting over sights in low light (even during the daytime, in a basement, warehouse, or other dark environment) is the tendency to shoot _over_ your target, because the front sight gets raised higher than it should be in order for the eye to visualize it more clearly.

I've used Mepro and Trijicon tritium sights on several duty weapons, and they are helpful. With front and rear sights that are the same color, it is still easy, under stress, to raise the front sight too high, or to move the front sight to one side or the other of the rear sight. With the two color Tru-Glo sights, this problem is avoided. It is obvious when the front sight is aligned properly with the rear sight. While the red and green combination is acceptable, I personally find the green front, yellow rear easier and quicker to pick up.

These Tru-Glo sights work...

See Pros! I started with the basic FOP sights on my G-27 as that seems to work best. Then I went to the TFO for my G-22 which is my "on the ranch" carry. Same great look in day time - and a good look for that first shot at night.
Pros: This is a quality product. I run a set of FO sights on my EDC and went to this for my Field gun based on looking at them via brothers. End game, I love them!
Cons: None that I have found. Any cons should be in the eyes of the shooter. "What are you looking at"?...

Easy to see

I really like these sights. This is the 3rd set that I've bought. Glows in complete darkness. The front sight screw came loose after 30 rounds. Applied locktite but haven't shot it since.
Pros: Easy to install, bright, easy to see
Cons: front sight came loose after 30 rounds...

These sights were just what I needed to help me as my aging eyesight is no longer what it used to be. Very strong and seem to be able to stand a beating....

TFO Yellow / Green XDm Compact

by Legacy Reviewer, Verified Owner from United States, MT Written on May 2, 2012
By design the yellow rear sight is dimmer than the front yellow. in daylight the fiber optics are great. low light the yellow is a bit to dull. the darker it is the better the sights work. I use this for a carry gun and night use. they are very good. but when I read the rear was less luminus i thought ok it's that way by design. So why were people complaining. Now i know. it is just a little to subdued for me. Since it is a different color than the front maybe it could be a little brighter. After all the contrast od yellow to green will prevent green overlap. I have the TFO greens on other guns. if i had it to do over I would probably stick to the green and no yellow. I won't change what I have for now because it does work.
Pros: Better than stock sights. Fair price
Cons: Yellow rear could be brighter....

Overall: great sights

by Legacy Reviewer, from United States, WA Written on March 7, 2012
These are overall great sights. that being said, a warning to Glock shooters: after installation on my model 21 I noticed a small problem. Due to the length of the front sight, and the way front sights are installed on glock pistols, there was a slight possibility of front sight movement. This would not be as prevalent on dovetail front sights. Locktight applied to the sight cut milled into the pistol (as opposed to only the threads on the sight) seems to have solved the problem. Other than that, no problems after 1000+ rounds. They line up quick in any light condition and hold zero better than I do.
Pros: visibility, speed of acquisition, multiple light conditions
Cons: installation, durability ...
