7.62x39mm Ammo, also known as 762 Soviet AK-47, is a rimless rifle cartridge that originated during WWII and has remained a popular choice for target practice due to its lower cost than comparable calibers. However, this ammunition is also used for hunting whitetails and other small to medium-sized game. Most deer hunters turn to Hollow Point (HP) or Soft Point (SP) bullets, while competitive shooters and range aficionados usually go with Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) ammunition.image

What are the differences between steel and brass casings?

While both materials are reliable, the main difference comes from the malleability of the metals. Brass is more malleable, which means it bends and flexes easier, so it creates a tighter seal when the propellant is ignited. This allows the case to expand and push the round through the barrel with extreme force. Steel also flexes in response to this, but not as much, so some gas is lost in the chamber and receiver. However, brass casings are more expensive to manufacture, so the rounds often cost more. Generally, the style you choose comes down to preference. For example, a high-volume shooter may prefer 7.62 FMJ steel case rounds, as these are cheap and reliable, while someone who only shoots occasionally may want brass casing rounds. Additionally, if you are into reloading, you’re better off going with brass casings, as they are easier to reuse.

What types of firearms use 7.62x39mm Ammo?

The first weapon to use this round was the Russian AK-47, and it remains the most popular platform that utilizes 7.62x39mm Ammo. However, modern manufacturers and gun designers have created a wide variety of weapons that are chambered in 7.62. For example, some AR manufacturers have created 7.62 compatible carbines, allowing people who prefer this platform to enjoy the benefits of shooting the low-cost, reliable round. There are even some bolt action and magazine-fed rifles that are chambered in this round, which are excellent for hunting.

Is 7.62x39 ammo the same as .308?

No, these rounds are not the same. This is a common mistake, but .308 rounds will not fit in a mag or load in a rifle that is designed for 7.62x39mm. Instead, the mistake stems from the round that NATO uses, which is 7.62x51mm. While these rounds are the same caliber, the .308 and 7.62x51mm NATO rounds are much longer than your standard AK47 round, and are designed for different weapons.
