A pocket holster is just that: a holster that goes into your pocket. They're not just for pocket pistols, which is a loosely defined term that applies to typically small-caliber handguns that are very small-framed and will usually fit into the palm of your hand. In the old days, many of these weren't carried in a holster at all, they were just tucked into a pocket and off you go. Not the safest way to carry a firearm. These days, there are pocket holsters designed to accommodate up to medium-framed handguns that are tailored to specific models.image

What is the point of a pocket holster?

Like any Holster, a pocket carry holster is specifically designed to carry a firearm, rather than just having it jumbling around with the potential of snagging and/or accidentally discharging in your pocket. Usually carried in the front pocket of your pants on the strong (dominant hand) side, people find that they can also use them in both inner and outer jacket pockets, side pockets, purses, bags, and backpacks. Although some would say that pocket carry is not a reasonable method, some considerations can make it a solid consideration depending on your situation and individual needs or preferences:

  • Printing:

"Printing" simply means that the outline of the gun can clearly be seen through your clothing, meaning you're only technically concealing it. Most pocket holsters have a shape like a wallet, covering the barrel, frame, and trigger guard with one flat piece. The result usually does look quite a bit like you're carrying a wallet in your front pocket, which isn't that unusual and doesn't draw any attention.
  • Stability:

The pocket holster's square base keeps the gun from shifting around in your pocket. It also helps to keep it stable as you walk, move, sit down, and stand up. The design also makes it falling out of your pocket far less likely.
  • Hot Weather:

When wearing multiple outer layers isn't reasonable and you may only be wearing a t-shirt, a pocket holster has benefits over a belt holster. IWB (Inside the Waist Band) holsters can chafe when you get sweaty, and that's just uncomfortable all around. OWB (Outside the Waist Band) holsters are fine for concealed carry in the cooler months when you can throw on a jacket, but in hot weather, you clearly have a firearm at your waist and that becomes open carry. If you prefer to tuck in your shirt and aren't wearing a jacket, a pocket gun holster is an ideal solution.
  • Unholstering Without Unholstering:

This comes in pretty handy if you're running errands and going in and out of places that don't allow firearms by policy or law. Instead of pulling your gun out of the holster to lock it up in your car, you simply pull the holstered firearm out of your pocket to stash it away and get on with your business. This is a convenient way to carry if you're driving a lot, like long road trips. Instead of having your gun difficult to access on a waist holster that's poking you in the side, you can just take it out of your pocket and put it in an easily accessible location like a center console, where it will also enjoy the protection of the pocket holster.
  • Access:

Unlike other highly concealed designs like ankle holsters, there's no need to take a knee, move clothing out of the way, or otherwise learn and practice somewhat unnatural motions. All you have to do is put your hand in your pocket, a pretty habitual movement that we all do daily without even thinking about it, and draw your weapon. That square design holds the holster in place as you draw so it remains in your pocket, especially those that are designed to include a "wing catch," which is a little tab that intentionally snags during rapid draws to give you a little extra peace of mind.

Is pocket carry legal?

Provided you're following all of the laws and regulations regarding concealed carry, pocket carry is perfectly legal. It isn't any different than concealing a firearm in any other type of concealment holster like an Ankle Holster, Shoulder Holster, Belt Holster, or belly band. Of course, you should always check all of your local laws before carrying concealed and especially check ahead to anywhere you may be traveling to ensure you're compliant with all regulations.
