ross's Review of Homak Electronic Pistol Box

But what are you expecting for $40? Fact is this metal box is very solid and heavy. Secure enough to keep valuables or a small pistol out of the reach of the average child.
The letter keys are 'soft touch'. You can leave the factory 'combination' or program one of your own. In the event your batteries go dead it has the option of providing 'power' via an external 9 volt battery connection thus enabling you to enter the combination and open the box.
I lined mine with a thin sheet of foam to protect the items I store inside. Scissors and glue - it's easy.
As I was building a storage cabinet out of pine I incorporated the box hidden behind a side panel. While the Homak comes pre-drilled with four mounting holes in the rear I drilled four more - two top and two bottom to secure it to the wooden shelves. It's undetectable to the casual observer, safe from kids, and due to it's location inside the cabinet a burglar would have to smash the heavy cabinet into pieces and likely spend 10-15 minutes doing so as there's not enough room to insert a pry-bar to get at it. A lot of effort and time spent breaking into a box with unknown contents (if any).
This box only opens via the combination lock. No key override and that's a GOOD THING. Too many YouTube videos out there showing 6 year old kids successfully breaking into key locks armed only with a paper clip. Plus the fact any 12 year old (or professional burglar) can order cheap 'master keys' off Ebay for cylinder locks. If a youngster wants into this Homak safe he/she will have to physically pry it open knowing full-well mom or dad will have their hide when they discover the damage.
For all the above reasons I passed on a myriad of strong boxes in favor of this model.
But be forewarned that while this box opens fast a Glock 19 is a tight fit for quick retrieval (the medium sized model). Probably better suited to a sub-compact sized firearm.
This box is not meant to keep out a professional thief but for it's intended use - keeping out the inquisitive child or nosy relative/friend it works just fine. For $40 considering all it's positive features I recommend the purchase of this item. It's so much better than simply trying to hide valuables in a sock drawer or book safe that the kids are bound to stumble onto and affords the security minded owner some peace of mind.
Pros:
  • Low cost
  • No key override
  • Solid and heavy
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • Keeping kids out
