dustydog's Review of Leapers UTG Compact Tactical Green Laser Sight w/ Mounting Ring

I have three of these now, two in the Gen 2 Light/Laser combo, and one laser-only, and in the market for another combo as soon as they go "on sale" again : )

No known issues with any of them yet; UTG just seems to have a great design team, and the one time I e-mailed UTG support with a general question before purchasing the first of these (one of the combos), I quickly got a response from one of their engineers who fully addressed the question. Over the years, many times I've ended up with a UTG product that fit the bill perfectly after LOTS of research. Now, I'll often check their offerings FIRST.

Note that these units don't have a click-detent on the adjustment screws, but sometimes that seems preferable. I've not detected any tendency to lose zero, and, if you're careful, you may be able to make adjustments in smaller increments than you could with coarse clicks.

After making your major adjustments, just be careful not to disturb the setting while inserting the L-wrench (a FEATHER-TOUCH is important for fine adjustments!), insert the SHORT end into the adjusting screw, take out the slack between the screw and the wrench, again without disturbing the current setting YET, then CAREFULLY tweak the screw while watching the long arm of the L-wrench to judge the number of degrees you want to move for your final settings. You can easily judge 1/60th of a turn this way.

Another note with these and other lasers, where some users (including myself) have noticed that sometimes the laser dot seems imprecise, distorted, or maybe looks like a cluster of dots on target... are you wearing GLASSES? I have noticed various phenomena while viewing the dot on target, and finally realized that certain eyeglass LENSES, their STRENGTH, or perhaps the coatings on them, can cause certain aberrations that other (maybe higher-quality?) lenses do not... something to think about.
Pros:
  • great design
  • Solid feel
Cons:
  • Lack of adjustment detents means no tactile feedback when adjusting; can also be a plus if you're careful
