When upgrading from or adding to iron sights (front sight and rear sight), the most common optics you see are Red Dot Sights. They allow for quicker target acquisition than a traditional rifle scope, which you’ll also see on AK-pattern rifles, while offering more range than just iron sights.
Standard AK sights are a fixed U-shape tangent rear sight and an adjustable front sight post. The rear sight is adjustable for range and has preset notches indicating range in meters. This allows the shooter to quickly adjust from 100 meters to 300, or vice versa.
If you’re using the iron sights, it’s best to zero your AK at 100 meters (not yards) based on the “1” marking on the rear sight. You can then test the zero by moving the rear sight up to the “2” position and targeting at 200 meters, “3” for 300 meters, etc.
If you’re zeroing with optics, 100 meters is typically a minimum. Most of the time, AK optics would be zeroed at 200 meters to take full advantage of reaching out to 300 meters using holdover or turret adjustments, depending on the optic.
