If you are an avid or even a casual shooter, hearing protection is vital to your ear health and the longevity of your sense of hearing, especially in noisy environments. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) affects over 10 million Americans, which is an unbelievable amount considering this injury is entirely preventable. If noise levels exceed 85 decibels (dB), the microscopic hair cells inside the cochlea of your ear can be permanently damaged. To put things in perspective, a gunshot ranges between 140 and 190 dB, depending on the caliber and type of firearm. Reduce your noise exposure with our huge selection of hearing protection devices, including electronic hearing protection, shooting earbuds, rechargeable tactical headsets, and more. We carry tons of options, like OPMOD Hearing Protection, ISOtunes Sport Hearing Protection, Walkers Hearing Protection, and more from top brands in the industry to provide you with top-of-the-line hearing protection for shooting, landscaping, and all types of hazardous noise.image

What Are the Main Types of Hearing Protection?

There are two different types of hearing protection: passive and active. Passive hearing protection is simply anything that provides a barrier between external noises and your ear canal. Active hearing protection, or electronic hearing protection, uses digital parts to suppress incoming noises and can also amplify surrounding noises like conversations. Both of these different types of hearing protection are available as ear plugs/inserts or ear muffs.

What Hearing Protection Is Best?

The best hearing protection for shooting depends on your needs and budget. In terms of quality, electronic hearing protection provides the best defense against decibels, and you can adjust the settings to hear lower dB sounds, such as conversation if you want to talk to your buddy at the range. Passive ear protection is still a reliable option to safeguard your ears, as long as they at least provide a minimum of 15dB reduction, but 30dB is the ideal minimum rating to protect your hearing. Passive ear muffs and plugs also cost much less than active earwear and are available as disposables. Check out our guide on Ear Plugs vs. Ear Muffs for an in-depth look at the pros and cons of each.

What Is NRR?

NRR stands for Noise Reduction Rating and is a unit of measurement that rates how effective hearing protection is for decreasing sound exposure from your surrounding environment. NRR is measured in decibels. To determine how many dB your hearing protection will reduce from incoming noise, use this formula: (NRR dB - 7) / 2 = dB reduction ear protection provides. For example, using hearing protection with an NRR of 31 would look like (31-7) / 2 = 12dB. So if you wear hearing protection rated at 31dB at a concert generating around 100dB, your incoming noise is 88 dB.

What Is a Good NRR?

For indoor gun ranges, a Noise Reduction Rating of 28-31dB is recommended. Using the formula from the question above will give you an idea of how much noise you'll be exposed to while wearing hearing protection. Then, you can determine if the level of dB exposure is enough to protect your hearing for extended periods.
