AR-platform buffer systems are an essential part of the operating system of direct impingement AR15s. The buffer is where the recoil spring is housed and where the bolt carrier group retracts during the ejection stage of the firing cycle. The buffer tube is also what the buttstock attaches to on an AR15. In the past, most AR15s have not been able to have a side folding stock like AK-47s or other gas piston-operated rifles due to this limitation. However, modern folding stock adapters have provided that feature while still allowing the AR 15 buffer system to work properly. Can You Put a Folding Stock on AR Rifles?
Direct impingement AR15s operate by using a buffer system. Traditionally the buffer tube is threaded into the lower receiver and a pin captures the buffer spring/weight. By installing an AR folding stock adapter (like the Law Tactical or Sylvan Arms products) in between the buffer tube and the receiver, you can fold the stock assembly. Folding stocks allow the overall length of the rifle to be shortened to make it easier to travel with and store a rifle.
What Is an AR Folding Stock Adapter?
Folding stock adapters have two attachment faces. The first attachment face will thread into the rear of the lower receiver where you would normally thread on a buffer tube. Once the folding stock adapter is properly attached to the lower receiver, the buffer tube is threaded onto the other side of the folding stock adapter just like if you were to attach it directly to the lower receiver. You will use the original buffer retaining pin and spring when you install the buffer tube. Once the buffer tube is installed, you can reattach the buffer spring and buffer to the buffer tube.
The folding stock adapter will also come with a bolt carrier extension. This piece will slide into the rear opening of your BCG (Bolt Carrier Group) and is designed to allow the BCG to contact the buffer when the BCG is cycling. Since there is now more space between the standard bolt carrier group and buffer with the folding stock adapter attached to the receiver, this bolt carrier extension is necessary for the proper functioning of the rifle.
Once the folding stock adapter is installed properly, you can then install your buttstock to your buffer tube like you would normally. The folding stock adapter will now allow you to fold your buffer assembly and stock to the side of your rifle making it easier to store or transport. Remember that your rifle should never be fired when the stock is folded. This is because the rifle still needs the buffer assembly to function properly.
What Is the Best Folding Stock Adapter for an AR 15?
Law Tactical Folding Stock Adapter
The Law Tactical Folding Stock Adapter is the first and most well-known folding adapter available. It will work with gas piston systems and direct impingement ARs using A2, Mil-Spec, or commercial buffer tubes and Mil-Spec BCGs. The Law Tactical adapter weighs 8.5oz and the bolt carrier extension weighs 2oz. The Law Tactical folding stock adapter will also add 1.3 inches to the length of pull. It is made from 4140 steel and is a good option for anyone looking for a folding stock adapter.
Sylvan Arms Folding Stock Adapter
The Sylvan Arms Folding Stock Adapter is another good option. This adapter also works with gas piston systems and direct impingement ARs using A2, Mil-Spec, or commercial buffer tubes. The bolt carrier extension will work with Mil-Spec BCGs. The Sylvan Arms folding stock adapter weighs 6oz and the bolt carrier extension weighs 1.1oz making it lighter than the Law Tactical Folding Stock Adapter. However, the Sylvan Arms folding stock adapter will add 2 inches to the length of pull which is a little more than the Law Tactical folding stock adapter.
