Are they detent retention or just held up by a spring?

These sights do not have a spring. They are held up by a metal detent.

You need a front sight tool to adjust the elevation. It can be folded with either aperture being used.

I have MBUS pros on my 16” and these on my 8.5” 300BLK... the magpuls are lower profile but the 2 sets of sights serve very different purposes. For CQB, the ghost ring is perfect

Yes, these sights are same-plane, they should line up when mounted on a level rail.
