I have a S&W Shield 1.0 Front pipe came out. How do I know if I need a short or long replacement pipe?

If you have the HiViz "LiteWave" sights for M&P and M&P Shield you would need the long pipe size.

are they the type that when under a light for a few minutes will improve the visibility?

These are fiber optic, so they should start to glow as soon as they are in light.
