This item is best used horizontally on the bottom of your safe.

Does the elec.cord detach so that it can be fished thru the holes in back of a StackOn36-40 gun safe?Would the 24" be the right size for my StackOn?

The Stack-On 36-40 appears to have a factory-installed electrical outlet, so you should not need to fish the cable through. The 24" model should fit as the internal width of the safe is 26.5".
