The locking tab is sufficient because the spring and the locking tab on the base of the spring provides enough tension to keep the plate in place. In fact, it is almost impossible to remove the extension base unless to pry enought for the tab to clear the mag. It is actually more of a pain to have the tab if ou are going to use the pins anyway.
