Purchasing a quality release is extremely important, and like all things, it must be a good fit for you personally. An archery release is used with traditional bows, recurve bows, and compound bows. OpticsPlanet.com has over 30 brands that manufacture hundreds of releases for right-handed or left-handed archers. Make every shot you take with your bow count with these archery releases.image

What Are Archery Release Aids?

A bow release aid is a device that helps to fire arrows from a compound bow and recurve the bow more precisely by using a trigger to release the bowstring rather than the archer's fingers.

What Are the Different Types of Bow Releases & Release Aids?

Finger Releases

There are many types of finger releases. Some are handheld, and others will wrap around your wrist for support. Finger releases most closely resemble pulling the trigger on a handgun, shotgun, rifle, or crossbow. An archer must pull a trigger release with the index finger. Having used a finger release trigger for years, I can tell you from experience there is a significant drawback to this type of release. When wearing gloves, it is possible to release the trigger accidentally and thereby miss the shot. Though it has only happened to me on two occasions, there is a possibility. In a hunting situation, you don't want to ruin an opportunity (not to mention that it can be unsafe).

Thumb Button Release

3-D shooters often use thumb releases. A thumb release is usually handheld, but some are attached to a wrist strap. The positive of a thumb trigger is that there is far less of a jerking motion when the arrow is released. Check out the T.R.U. Ball Release Max Pro+ Handheld Thumb Release.

Hinge Release

A hinge release, or back tension release, is an easy-to-use beginner-type release aid that is a handheld release activated by a back rotation of the release. When the handle rotates, it causes a searing mechanism to slip, the hook opens, and the bow fires.

Back Tension Releases

Back Tension Releases are similar to hinge releases; however, these releases have built-in safety. The archer draws the bow without firing the arrow. This compound bow release is a game-changer for archers struggling with target panic or even archers who are beginners or looking to improve their shooting abilities.

Wrist Strap Release

When reading about these various wrist releases, note that it comes down to preference and what you are more comfortable with as an archer. Also, allow yourself time to get used to a new release when you're first using it. A D-loop is attached to the bowstring and below the arrow's nock. With one point of connection, you can feel confident that the archer will release the bowstring the same way every time, like the Scott Archery Shark II, Scott Archery Hero X Youth Release, and the Spot Hogg Wiseguy Release.
