Dave's Review of FOURSEVENS Maelstrom MM-X Flashlight w/ 900 Lumen Burst Mode

The MM-X is one of FourSeven's ultra-rugged Maelstrom line of flashlights and is weapons mountable. There are two groups of programs available by twisting the flashlight head. The one I use has a 900 Lumen Burst mode high when the head is fully tightened, 250 Lumens Medium when the head is loosened a quarter turn, 32 Lumens Low when loosed another quarter turn, and about 1 Lumen 'Moonlight' when loosened another quarter turn. The forward clicky tail switch allows either momentary on or turning it on for longer periods without holding the button down. The 900 Lumen burst mode gives full poser for a minute and then ramps down to about 450 Lumens over the next 30 seconds to limit heat build up in the flashlight. If you need the full 900 Lumens for longer all you have to do is click the light on and off and it starts the cycle over again at full power. I use the MM-X for walks at night when the 900 Lumen power level is useful for scanning for critters (we have Cougar and Bear as well as Deer, Elk, and a variety of smaller critters), the 32 Lumen level to conserve battery power while identifying uneven ground and ice patches, and the 1 Lumen level is ad equate for navigating a dark house at night without disturbing night vision. The other group of settings includes High, Strobe, Strobe, SOS, and Beacon. Another feature that makes this light an all purpose performer is that it runs on your choice of two CR123A 3 Volt (primary) batteries, two RCR123A 4.2 Volt (rechargeable) batteries, or one 18650 4.2 Volt rechargeable battery. Published figures for runtimes are 1.5 hours on High, 3.7 hours on Medium, 21 hours on Low, and 25 days on Moonlight, with two CR123A batteries. If you use a 3400 mAh 18650 rechargeable battery your runtimes will be about twice as long! It's a well made light at a very reasonable price, backed with great customer service and a 10 year warrantee.
