Riverruby's Review of Celestron NexStar Evolution 6 Schmidt-Cassegrain Telescope

First and most important, I wanted a tetescope I could assemble, disassemble and transport, around 60 lbs total weight. I decided on a Dobsonion, two pieces about thirty lbs each. Very glad that I didnot order it. I happened to spot an artical about the Evolution 8, I really was not a fan of Celestron telescopes and was very hesitant to place the order. The more I researched and with a few emails to Celestron, who were very helpful, I placed the order for the 6" model although the 8" is only about 5 lbs heavier, why?, I am 80, bad back and weak in the legs and tire easily. I made a very good choice. I can break it down to two pieces, tripod, mount and OTA, I could do into 3 parts but have not found it necessary. The built in handle on the mount makes it very easy to carry. The tripod has a narrower stance than my Meade tripod but stands taller, I can stand erect to view. It is also very stable. The telescoping legs are marked at about 1" increments and bold markings at 5" increments. Very helpful. I did have to put an half inch spacer at the top of the center rod to get it to function properly tho. The mount and optical tube are well constructed and function very smooth and quiet. When skewing at medium to slow speed you will not hear it at all with little backlash which is adjustable . The wifi is a joy to use but you have to be away from other networks for best results. I have setup about twice a week now for over a month and I can say this wil not be a closet scope. There are screws that hold the end caps to the optical tube and by sighting over the screws on the top of the tube you can get dead on planets and stars without using the starfinder, like sighting a rifle. I hope to find a laser pointer or a diagonal finderscope for that I cannot see with naked eye. For me it is a great telescope and has a lot of features not shown even in the manual. Even without the wifi it would be my choice of telescopes. It should last me a lifetime(lol).
Pros:
  • Carrying handles
  • Built in battery
  • smooth operating
Cons:
  • Poor collimation procedure
Would Recommend: Yes
